BardCollege was founded in 1860 and located in Annandale-on-Hudson of upstate NewYork. Bard College is situated in Hudson Valley, as its motto is “A Place toThink”,which emphasizes “free” “liberal arts education”.
ShawnMoore, the director of Bard Collegeenrollment in Asia, graduated from the BardCollege and Yale University. Shawn won the Light Fellowscholarship in YaleUniversity from 2013 to 2014. As a violinist, Shawn Moore is keen on chambermusic. He is often invitedto participate in the Geneva Music Festival, the BardMusic Festival and other concerts all over the world as a solo artistregularly.
On January17th2016, Bard College offered a testing center in Beijing DistrictChina at the CCPS for the third year. It seems to be different from traditionalChinese universities; make the first-term graduates from CCPS give up the offerof the Julliard School. How is the Bard that receives considerable reputationin America?
The major teaching characteristics of Bard College
ShawnMoore:Liberal Arts College is one of the characteristics. Small classes take upthe most part whilethe ratio of teachers and studentsis 1 to 10.The scale ofthe school is also quite small with about 2000 students; students have moreresources due to the ratio. Because students in class area few, there are manyopportunities to communicate and interact with teachers for them. Many coursesare conducted in the form of discussion rather than listening to the teacher’sspeech.
What kind of students does Bard College prefer?
Shawn Moore:Objectively speaking, Bard does not forceapplicants to submit SAT or ACT scores. The students that were admittedhave anaverage TOEFL score of 100 points. The GPA of most students admitted is in thetop 10%.
Tobe more subjective, we need to knowthat one student hasardent love for learning; one shall like learning tolearn rather thanlearning for something else and enjoythe process of learning through the application letters. As for other factors, a suitableschool environment is criticalto the students. Ourschool has a strongcultural atmosphere, so we hope to takein applicants whocanappreciate it. Thecourses of our school include four major disciplines, namely humanity,natural science, social science and art with more than 50 specialties. Nomatter what the students major in, they have to choose optionalcourses ineach category. For example, students who chose mathematics majors take optional coursesin pharmacy, literature, history, art, philosophy and so on, and the ones who select photographymajors take mathematics, science and Sociology (such as Economicsand Finance) and so on. This idea has thebest embodiment in College of Music. Because it requestseach student choose a non-art major as a second one to ensureeach student is not limited to their own narrow field.Therefore, when we are testing applicants,the most ideal candidate shall have morecomprehensive characteristics, because the students haverecognizedthe ideal value of Bard’s all-round education throughhis or her learning behavior.
EnrollmentRequirements for Bard College Music Program: howto havedouble majors?
Shawn Moore:the requirements in music majormainly depend on the teachers, that is to say, students requirenot only to be admitted bythe school, but also be accepted by professional teachers. It is difficult to talk about the specific requirements. Generallyspeaking, the professional requirements are relatively rigorous,especially playing skills as the professors in the Bardare distinguished group of people. Meanwhile,theyalso teach at the Julliard School of Music and the CurtisInstitute of Music.Eachstudent in the Bard College must learn doubledegree courses. Theycan choose any non-art majoras the second profession without limits. Therefore, each applicantneeds to submit the CommonApplication for the Bard and application for Collegeof music.
Opinions and suggestions for Chinese candidates
Shawn Moore: I wish that Chinese candidates can exhibittheir most genuine qualities, which would be most convincing.
BardCollege Scholarship policy
Shawn Moore: The outstandingapplicants frequently get plentiful scholarship; the scholarships they can apply include : STEM (Science): DSSscholarship; financeand economics: Levyscholarship; in addition, College of Music also gives generousscholarship; theadmission office will arrange some scholarship programs toattract talented students whenenrolling new students.
Different the applicantsof the United States nationality, generally, we will not considerthe economic needs toestablish scholarshipwhen considering internationalstudents.

Shawn Moore 莫灵风
Shawn Moore毕业于巴德学院和耶鲁大学, 获得了亚洲研究学士学位，主要研究中国文化。 他也是2013-2014耶鲁大学的LightFellow奖学金获得者，在韩国进修了一年韩语和韩国文化。现在他在北京定居，作为自由职业者在世界各个地从事音乐职业并同时兼任巴德学院亚洲区招生主管。
Shawn Moore对室内乐最有热心，经常作为独奏艺术家固定参与日内瓦音乐节、巴德音乐节以及全世界的大大小小音乐会邀约演出。他能自在的演奏从古典到电子音乐的音乐类型，他也曾与一些艺术家如保罗.米勒（别称：DJ Spooky），著名民歌手Natalie Merchant （娜坦莉梅），以及许多的其他音乐家朋友一起演出。去年他与亲兄弟组的成四重奏跟Natalie Merchant做了全美巡演并一起录制唱片。（上图为Shawn Moore 2015年在中音鼎石开设大师班）
